Melvil Dewey first built a resort for his friends in Lake Placid, NY.  Later he decided Flordia would be a good place for his wealthy friends to spend the winter so he built a fancy resort (which is now the Conference Center) and got the powers that be to change the name of the town and near by lake to Lake Placid after the one in New York.
